This is one of those times I hope this is not a story about a specific patient...an actual living & breathing mom, until she wasn't...but rather a compilation of what you see in your practice. And that the daughter was also a composite of multiple family members you encounter in your work. We all need these stark dramatic stories to get our attention and teach us, so we may be prepared when the time comes for us to be that mother-patient or child/spouse. So we don't repeat the trangressions of others and have to request the forgiveness of our god. "Bless me father for I have sinned..."<br /><br />PS Dr. Grumet, both essays this week were stunningly stark and powerful.
